About corneal transplantation

Corneal transplantation and eye bank

If the cornea becomes cloudy or scarred from an eye injury or disease, vision beomes blurred. The cornea should be removed and replaced by a normal cornea. This is coneal transplantation.
An eye bank is a non-profit organization which obtains, emaluates, processes and distributes corneas donated by individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research and education.

Evaluation of donor cornea

Evaluation of corneas occurs before and after separation from the whole eye. Specular microscope is used to evaluate the endothilial cells. Also, a sample of blood for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and others are screened. The extensive evaluation of tissue, blood, and mdical history is performed to ensure no transmittable diseases are transferred to the recipient of the tissue.

About Corneal endothelium

Corneal endothelium

Endothelium are a single layer, located on the back surface of the cornea.
These cells are very important for keeping clarity of the cornea. Endothelium do not replace themselves when they are damaged. When damaged, to fill the gaps, the surrounding cells grow larger. If the damage is hard and the function can not be kept, the cornea will begin to swell and eye sight may blur. The specular microscope is an instrument to observe the corneal endothelium.
